Xavi Preparing To Takeover At Camp Nou

Barcelona legend Xavi has revealed he and his coaching staff are preparing to take over his former club in the future.

The current Al Sadd manager had been touted to take the reins at the Nou Camp earlier this year after the dismissal of Ernesto Valderde, but Quique Setien was instead hired with the iconic midfielder having turned down the role.

And the pressure has now mounted on the LaLiga champions, who are flailing in the defence of their crown, with Xavi once again underlining his intention to help steer them to success in a fresh project.

Barcelona have slipped two points behind Real Madrid at the top of the standings with just six matches remaining.

A number of frustrated players reportedly endured a heated war of words with Setien after the 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo.

Xavi played 767 games in total for Barcelona and even held talks with officials from the club in Doha in January.

But the 40-year-old rejected a two-and-a-half-year contract, and admitted he had turned down his boyhood club due to his relative inexperience with coaching at the highest level.

He recently told a video conference, via Sport: ‘The biggest hope I have now is to be Barca coach and get Barca back to winning ways.

‘Not me but these players and Barca triumphing. And as a consequence, our technical staff, who are preparing for it a lot and it makes us really excited.’

Despite the reported civil war raging at Barcelona, Xavi has insisted he will only return if he is handed full control over crucial decisions.

He added: ‘I’m a club man. I would like to return at the right moment to start a project from zero. Xavi insisted he would only return to the Nou Camp if he is handed full control over decisions

‘I’ve said it a lot of times but I want to take footballing decisions at Barcelona.

‘It’s clear that after the elections the stage would be set, of course. I’m not ruling anything out.

‘They came for me in January, we were speaking. I told them the circumstances and timing weren’t right.’

The club are next set to hold a presidential election in the summer of 2021 – when current supremo Josep Maria Bartomeu will stand down.
