Trump ramps up calls for Rep. Stefanik to replace Liz Cheney

Former President Donald Trump is ramping up his calls for the House Republican Conference to rally behind Rep. Elise Stefanik to replace embattled “warmonger” Rep. Liz Cheney as conference chair.

His push for Stefanik (R-NY) come just one day ahead of the meeting where a vote is expected to take place to determine Cheney’s fate in leadership — with the Wyoming Republican having come under fire for her continued criticisms of Trump.

Trump touted Stefanik’s endorsements from the NRA and National Border Patrol Council, among others.

“The House GOP has a massive opportunity to upgrade this week from warmonger Liz Cheney to gifted communicator Elise Stefanik. Elise has intelligence, an endorsement from American Patriot Brandon Judd and the National Border Patrol Council, she has an A+ from the NRA, and she loves our Veterans,” he said in a statement.

Republicans attempted and failed to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from her position after she voted impeach former President Trump.

We need someone in Leadership who has experience flipping districts from Blue to Red as we approach the important 2022 midterms, and that’s Elise! She knows how to win, which is what we need!”

In addition to Trump, Stefanik — the former chair of the moderate Tuesday Group, whose profile rose in prominence as one of Trump’s most vocal defenders during the first impeachment trial — has also received endorsements from House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (left) has endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik (right) to take over as House Republican Conference Chair.

The vote to remove Cheney will mark the second attempt to oust her this year, after she overwhelmingly prevailed in February, shortly after she voted to impeach Trump.

But multiple GOP lawmakers have told The Post that the climate feels different this time around, with members arguing that her split with McCarthy on Trump-related issues and criticisms of the former president have hindered her ability to message for the conference.

Former President Donald Trump called Rep. Elise Stefanik a "gifted communicator."

While Cheney has come under fire from her GOP colleagues, she has defended her ongoing stance, arguing that voters deserve to know “the truth” about the election.
