Donald Trump demanded he be declared the winner of several states which he lost in last week’s US election, citing long debunked conspiracy theories about ‘inaccurate’ voting machines.
It follows the President pushing a theory about his votes being “stolen” by the voting machines, which had been pushed by a pro-Trump TV network – who themselves sourced it to an anonymous comment on a blog.
Claims had circulated that “glitches” in Dominion Voting Systems machines, which some local governments use to count their votes, had changed vote counts in Georgia and Michigan.
There were issues in two counties in Michigan, but both were caused by human error.
In one county, misconfigured machines initially reported Joe Biden ahead by about 3,000 votes in a largely Republican area. Upon rechecking the tally, officials found it had been counted correctly, but reported wrong. The error was corrected and Trump won the county.
A second county saw one city’s votes counted twice – but again the error was spotted and resolved relatively early in the process.
In Georgia, a problem with the software apparently delayed reporting of some vote counts, but did not change the result.
Georgia today embarked on a hand recount of all votes in the state, after the two candidates appeared less than 0.5 percentage points apart in the final result.
Despite the handful of errors being explained, the President has continued to push the conspiracy theories overnight.
Yesterday he posted an all-caps tweet making claims that Dominion machines had “deleted” 2.7 million Trump votes across the country, which is untrue.
He went on to claim votes were ‘switched’ from him to Biden in Pennsylvania, which state officials said had “no factual basis”.
The theory was promoted on hard-Trump TV news outlet One America News Network (OANN), who got it from an anonymous comment on a pro-Trump blog.
The claims were again picked up by Fox News host Sean Hannity, sparking a series of late-night tweets from the President.
“Must see Sean Hannity takedown of the horrible, inaccurate and anything but secure Dominion Voting System which is used in States where tens of thousands of votes were stolen from us and given to Biden,” he wrote.
“These states in question should immediately be put in the Trump Win column. Biden did not win, he lost by a lot!”
