Fast & Furious 9 Officially Wraps Filming

Director Justin Lin has confirmed that filming is done on Fast & Furious 9. The ninth mainline Fast & Furious was originally scheduled to open this year, but was later delayed to 2020 and its former date went to the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff instead.

Tinfamously resulted in Tyrese Gibson criticizing Dwayne Johnson on social media, calling him “selfish” for putting his solo movie first. Of course, this was all after Johnson and Vin Diesel clashed during production on The Fate of the Furious, prior to the spinoff being green-lit.

Thankfully, that’s all in the past now. Gibson’s deleted Instagram posts aside, Hobbs & Shaw ultimately became a commercial success thanks to the global box office. Meanwhile, Johnson and Diesel have publicly put their “feud” behind them, with The Rock even teasing Hobbs’ return for Fast & Furious 10. That film will reportedly conclude the mainline Fast & Furious series, following the events of the recently-wrapped Fast & Furious 9.

Lin, who directed four of the eight previous Fast & Furious films, took to Twitter to announce that shooting is done on Fast & Furious 9. You can see his post below.

The Fast & Furious movies have become an increasingly global franchise over time, with recent entries taking the series to locations like Abu Dhabi, Rio de Janeiro, and Iceland. That trend with continue with Fast & Furious 9, with Lin’s tweet confirming the film visits places like Thailand and Edinburgh, in addition to the property’s home turf in Los Angeles. Similarly, the franchise’s recurring ensemble has only grown more inclusive and international with every passing movie. In Fast & Furious 9, for example, Diesel and his core Fast family will be joined by Puerto Rican singer Ozuna, in addition to English actor Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders), New Zealander Anna Sawai (Ninja Assassin), and American wrestling superstar John Cena. That’s on top of returning cast members like Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron, reprising their Fate of the Furious roles as Magdalene Shaw and the villain Cipher.

With more than six months to go before the film’s release, Universal has plenty of time to get its Fast & Furious 9 marketing up and running. That said, they will almost certainly want a trailer out by next month, allowing it to play with big December movies like Jumanji: The Next Level and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker over the winter holiday frame. The studio took a similar approach three years ago, when it dropped the Fate of the Furious trailer in time for it to show with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on the big screen. Considering how well that worked out for them, they may well follow suit with Fast & Furious 9 in a few weeks from now.
