Demi Lovato Reflects On Would-Be Seven Year Sobriety Anniversary

She’s accepting her mistakes and moving forward.
Recovery is a lifelong process and a difficult one at that. Those who bravely choose to walk the road of recovery from drug abuse, substance abuse, toxic relationships, or any sort of addiction knows that relapse is a very real possibility. Demi Lovato has lived her life in the spotlight since she was a child, and while fame and fortune make it look as if she’s living the good life without a care in the world, the singer faces addiction issues that have interrupted her life.

Lovato took a moment to reflect on her recovery journey by posting a series of texts on her Instagram story. “Today I would’ve had 7 years sober,” the 26-year-old wrote. “I don’t regret going out because I needed to make those mistakes but I must never forget that’s exactly what they were: mistakes.”

“Grateful that AA/NA never shuts the door on you no matter how many times you have to start your time over,” Lovato continued. “I didn’t lose 6 years; I’ll always have that experience but now I just get to add to that time with a new journey and time count. If you’ve relapsed and are afraid to get help again, just know it’s possible to take that step towards recovery. If you’re alive today, you can make it back. You’re worth it.”

Last summer, Lovato was hospitalized after suffering a near-fatal overdose, reportedly after she ingested fentanyl-laced oxycontin. The singer was happy to share her recovery triumphs with fans after her release from rehab, but last month it was reported that she returned to a facility for her addiction. The news came after Lovato was criticized online for saying she was laughing at 21 Savage memes that concerned his ICE incarceration.

When rapper Wale asked her what she thought was funny about a man in jail, Lovato wrote on social media that he was just upset she curved him. People across all social networks weren’t happy with her response, and some have speculated that the backlash aided in her relapsing.
